House

12th house

The 12th house rules the unconscious, the hidden, places of retreat, and what dissolves the boundary between self and other.

The 12th house is the most subtle and often the most misunderstood: it rules the unconscious mind, dreams, hidden enemies, places of retreat (hospitals, monasteries, prisons), service done outside the spotlight, addictions and escapes, and the territory of merger with something larger than the personal self. The sign on the 12th-house cusp and any planets there describe what you carry that isn't immediately visible to you. Neptune in the 12th is doubly at home (Neptune is the modern ruler of Pisces, which rules the 12th) and tends to produce someone with a strong inner mystical or compassionate life. Saturn in the 12th often points to subconscious fears that take decades to recognize. The 12th house ends at the Ascendant, closing the cycle — what's been digested here becomes the raw material for the next 1st-house arrival.
