Calculation accuracy

Why your exact birth time matters

The rising sign is based on the eastern horizon, not only on the date. It changes about every two hours, and near a boundary even a few minutes can change the result. Date-only lists and Sun-sign shortcuts cannot calculate it reliably.

Use the time recorded on a birth certificate when possible. This tool resolves the historical time zone from your birthplace and sends the details to the same ephemeris used by the full chart, without saving the anonymous calculation.

Rising sign calculator FAQ

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was ascending over the eastern horizon at your birth. It is also called the Ascendant and establishes the first house of a timed birth chart.

Is the Ascendant the same as the rising sign?

Yes. Ascendant is the astronomical and astrological name for the exact degree rising on the eastern horizon; rising sign names the zodiac sign containing that degree.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. The rising sign changes throughout the day, so a date and place alone can produce several possible Ascendants. A recorded birth time is the best input; rectification by a qualified astrologer is a separate, interpretive process.

How precise does my birth time need to be?

Closer is better. The Ascendant moves roughly one degree every four minutes on average, although the rate varies by latitude and sign. A small error may change the degree, and a time near a sign boundary may change the rising sign itself.

Why do other rising sign calculators give a different result?

Differences usually come from an incorrect time zone, daylight-saving rule, birthplace coordinates, rounded birth time, or a calculator that treats local clock time as UTC. Check the exact data entered before comparing interpretations.
