Square

A square occurs when two planets are 90 degrees apart, sitting at right angles to each other in the chart. Squares are the canonical 'hard' aspect — they produce friction between the two planetary energies. Saturn square Mars makes acting on your drive feel effortful (you have the drive AND the brakes). Venus square Mars complicates love and desire (you want it AND you don't). Modern astrology treats squares less as 'bad' and more as growth engines: friction is what produces motion. The person with a Sun square Mars who learns to channel both energies productively becomes someone who can act decisively under pressure; the person who suppresses one in favor of the other gets symptoms (passive aggression, paralysis, eruption). Squares give you the energy to do something — but they don't tell you what to do.
