Modality

The three modalities — cardinal, fixed, mutable — classify signs by their mode of action: initiating, sustaining, or adapting.

The three astrological modalities — cardinal, fixed, mutable — classify the twelve zodiac signs into three groups of four by their mode of operating in time. CARDINAL (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): initiating, starting, taking the lead, breaking ground. Cardinal signs open each season. FIXED (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): sustaining, holding ground, building up, refusing to budge. Fixed signs anchor each season. MUTABLE (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): adapting, transitioning, fluid, bridge-building. Mutable signs close each season and prepare the next. A chart's modality balance describes someone's relationship to action: cardinal-heavy charts tend to start many things, fixed-heavy charts tend to persist (sometimes past usefulness), mutable-heavy charts tend to flex and adapt (sometimes losing definition). Squares always involve same-modality signs (e.g., Aries-Cancer-Libra-Capricorn all square each other), which explains the friction quality.
