Element

The four astrological elements — fire, earth, air, water — classify the twelve zodiac signs into four groups of three by their fundamental energetic quality. FIRE (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): action, inspiration, identity, will. EARTH (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practicality, body, structure, material reality. AIR (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): thinking, communication, relating, ideas. WATER (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): emotion, intuition, depth, connection. The elemental balance in a natal chart — counted by how many personal planets sit in each element — describes the texture of someone's basic mode. A chart with most planets in air signs produces someone whose primary mode is thinking and connecting; a heavy-water chart produces someone whose primary mode is feeling. Elements that are underrepresented in a chart often describe what the person has to consciously cultivate, since it doesn't come naturally.
