Secondary progressions use the symbolic rule “one day after birth equals one year of life.” At age 30, the progressed planetary positions come from roughly 30 days after birth, with fractional age mapped to fractional days. Each body keeps the motion it actually had during that symbolic period, so the Moon moves quickly, the Sun moves slowly, and a planet can station or turn retrograde.
Solar-arc directions first measure how far the secondary-progressed Sun has moved from the natal Sun. That one arc is then added equally to every natal planet, angle, and other directed point. At age 30 the arc is often near 30 degrees, but “one degree per year” is only a shortcut. The exact solar arc follows the progressed Sun and is not precisely one degree every year.
The practical difference is simple: secondary progressions let each planet move at its own ephemeris rate; solar arc moves the whole natal pattern forward by one shared amount. The methods may highlight similar periods, but their non-solar positions are mathematically different.
Calculation first, interpretation second
Both techniques produce calculated longitudes from declared rules. Neither calculation by itself proves an event or psychological change.
The calculation layer answers questions such as:
- What symbolic date corresponds to the target age?
- Where was each planet on that symbolic date?
- How far has the secondary-progressed Sun moved since birth?
- Which progressed or directed point forms a measured aspect to a natal point?
- How exact is that aspect under the selected orb?
The interpretation layer assigns astrological meaning to those contacts. Astrologers often describe secondary progressions as developmental or internal and solar arcs as concise timers for turning points. That is a convention of practice, not a physical property of the sky and not a validated promise that a particular event will occur.
How secondary progressions are calculated
The day-for-a-year method compresses a year of life into one day after birth. A simplified example makes the mapping clear:
- birth moment: 2 April 1990 at 10:00;
- target age: 30 years;
- symbolic progressed moment: approximately 2 May 1990 at 10:00;
- progressed positions: the ephemeris positions around that symbolic moment.
A precise implementation uses the person's exact age rather than discarding months and days. At age 30½, for example, the progressed moment is roughly half a day beyond the 30-day point.
Because the planets keep their individual motion, the progressed chart changes internally. The progressed Moon advances around 12 to 15 degrees for each year of life and usually spends about two and a half years in a sign. The progressed Sun advances close to one degree per year. Slower progressed planets may move very little, while Mercury, Venus, or Mars can change speed, station, or change direction if they did so in the days after birth.
This is also why a secondary progression is not a transit. A transit uses the planets' actual positions on the target calendar date. A progression uses positions from a symbolic post-birth date. Both can be compared with the natal chart, but they answer different methodological questions.
How solar-arc directions are calculated
Solar arc begins with one value:
solar arc = the normalized forward angular difference from the natal Sun to the secondary-progressed Sun
In degree arithmetic, that is (progressed Sun longitude − natal Sun longitude + 360°) mod 360°, which keeps the result positive when the progressed Sun crosses 0° Aries.
The calculator adds that arc to every natal point. If the progressed Sun has moved 30 degrees 14 minutes from its natal longitude, then the directed Moon, Mercury, Venus, Ascendant, Midheaven, and other selected points are each advanced by 30 degrees 14 minutes from their own natal longitudes.
That shared motion preserves the angular spacing inside the natal chart. A natal square remains a square among the corresponding solar-arc points because both ends moved by the same amount. What changes are the contacts between directed points and the unmoved natal chart.
Solar arc is sometimes called “solar-arc progression,” but “direction” is the clearer term because every point is directed by the same arc. The method does not claim that all the planets occupied those directed positions on one historical or current date.
The six differences that matter
1. The source of the positions
Secondary progressions use the individual planetary positions on the symbolic day after birth. Solar arc uses natal positions plus one arc derived from the secondary-progressed Sun.
2. How the planets move
In secondary progressions, the Moon remains fast and the outer planets remain slow. In solar arc, the Moon and every planet move by the same amount as the directed Sun.
3. Whether the chart's internal geometry changes
A secondary-progressed chart develops new planet-to-planet spacing as each body moves independently. A solar-arc chart preserves the natal spacing among equally directed points. Solar-arc work therefore focuses heavily on directed-to-natal contacts.
4. What tends to stand out
The progressed Moon, progressed Sun, sign changes, stations, and tight progressed-to-natal aspects are common secondary-progression focal points. Solar-arc practice usually prioritizes tight directed contacts to natal planets and especially to the Ascendant and Midheaven when the birth time is reliable.
5. Timing speed
Secondary factors move at different rates. A progressed Moon contact can develop over months, while a slow progressed planet can remain near the same degree for years. Most solar-arc points advance close to one degree per year, so a one-degree orb represents roughly a year of symbolic motion. Exact software should use the true solar arc rather than assuming every year equals exactly one degree.
6. Sensitivity to birth time
Both methods become much less specific when the recorded birth time is missing. The details differ, but neither technique can rescue angles or houses that were never known accurately in the natal chart.
Birth-time and unknown-time limits
A reliable clock time is essential for the natal Ascendant, Midheaven, house cusps, and house placements. It also materially affects the natal Moon and the progressed Moon because the Moon moves quickly.
For secondary progressions, a date-only chart can still show many non-lunar planetary longitudes. It should not present progressed angles, houses, or Moon-dependent contacts as exact. Methods for progressing angles also vary, so two tools may disagree even with identical birth data if they use different angle keys.
For solar arc, directing the Ascendant or Midheaven is only as sound as the natal angles. A small birth-time error can shift those angles enough to move an exact directed contact substantially. Planet-to-planet solar-arc contacts are less dependent on clock time, except when the natal Moon is involved.
If the time is unknown, a responsible workflow is to:
- mark the chart as time-unknown;
- omit angles, houses, and house placements;
- qualify or omit Moon-dependent results;
- concentrate on planet-to-planet contacts that remain stable across the plausible birth-time window;
- avoid presenting an exact day as certain when the inputs support only a wider period.
Which method should you use?
There is no universal winner because the methods are designed differently.
Use secondary progressions when you want to follow the changing relationship among the progressed planets, especially the progressed Moon, progressed Sun, sign changes, and stations. It provides a chart with internally changing geometry.
Use solar-arc directions when you want a compact scan of one uniformly directed chart against the natal chart. Tight contacts to well-timed natal angles are a central part of this practice.
Use both when you want corroboration without pretending that repetition guarantees an event. A careful astrologer may note a secondary progression, a solar-arc contact, and a transit near the same period, then describe the shared symbolism as a theme to observe. Multiple symbolic techniques can narrow attention; they still do not remove context, choice, or uncertainty.
A practical comparison workflow
- Verify the natal data. Check the date, local time, birthplace, historical timezone, zodiac, and house settings before comparing techniques.
- Calculate secondary progressions. Note the progressed Moon and Sun, any sign or direction changes, and the tightest progressed-to-natal aspects.
- Calculate the exact solar arc. Use the progressed-Sun arc rather than rounding the person's age to a whole number of degrees.
- Compare solar-arc points with natal points. Give priority to close contacts and disclose the orb.
- Separate stable results from time-sensitive ones. Angles, houses, and lunar factors require greater birth-time confidence.
- Write themes, not predictions. Record what each contact traditionally symbolizes and compare it with lived experience over time.

Common questions
Are solar arcs the same as secondary progressions?
No. They share the secondary-progressed Sun as a timing key, but only the Sun has the same longitude in both charts. The other secondary-progressed planets follow their own ephemeris motion; solar-arc points all receive the Sun's arc.
Is solar arc exactly one degree per year?
No. That is a useful mental estimate. The exact arc is the distance between the secondary-progressed Sun and natal Sun, and the Sun's apparent daily motion varies through the year.
Which method is better for the progressed Moon?
“Progressed Moon” normally means the Moon in secondary progressions. The solar-arc Moon is the natal Moon shifted by the uniform solar arc, so it is a different point with a different calculation.
Can either method predict a specific event?
